Halima Aden was born to Somali parents at a refugee camp in Kenya and made history in 2016 as the first hijab-wearing contestant in the Miss Minnesota beauty pageant and later in June 2017 made it on the cover of Vogue Arabia.
19-year-old Somali fashion star Halima Aden has again made history as the first hijab-wearing model on the cover of the top American women’s beauty magazine Allure.
She donned Nike’s high-performance hijab on the cover of the July issue with the caption: “This Is American Beauty”.
“I have much more to offer than my physical appearance, and a hijab protects me against ‘You’re too skinny,’ ‘You’re too thick,’ ‘Look at her hips,’ ‘Look at her thigh gap.’ I don’t have to worry about that,” she said in an interview with Allure.
“Society puts so much pressure on girls to look a certain way,” she added.
Aden moved to the United States with her mother at the age of seven and was raised as a Muslim. She told the magazine that she started wearing the hijab at the age of eight by imitating her mother.
“Every little girl looks up to her mom so much – that’s your first hero,” she said.
Halima Aden, who is also a student at the St. Cloud State University, is signed to international model management firm IMG Models and has walked in the Yeezy season five show at New York Fashion Week earlier this year.
The appointment of a woman as a top-flight referee in Germany has been hailed as a breakthrough for equality domestically and a milestone for football.
Bibiana Steinhaus has become an overnight celebrity since the announcement by the German football federation’s referee commission that she will take charge of games in the Bundesliga next season. The same organisation banned women from playing football as recently as the 1950s.
Writing in Die Welt, columnist Oskar Beck said that until now almost every element of the game was male, even the definite article “der”, which is used to describe everything from kick-off to goalpost, counterattack and corner kick. Fittingly, he said, “whistle” – “die Pfeife” – is feminine.
Steinhaus would change the tone of the game for the better, Beck added.
Another columnist said Steinhaus’s appointment ranked in importance with the country getting its first female chancellor in 2005.
The 38-year-old, from Bad Lauterberg in northern Germany, works as a police officer in Hannover, and is known as “Bibi”. She said the job “has always been my dream. That it should come true has obviously made me extremely happy.”
Actor Sir Roger Moore, best known for playing James Bond, has died aged 89, his family has announced.
He played the famous spy in seven Bond films including Live and Let Die and the Spy Who Loved Me.
Sir Roger’s family confirmed the news on Twitter, saying he had died after “a short but brave battle with cancer”.
The statement, from his children, read: “Thank you Pops for being you, and being so very special to so many people.”
“With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated,” they said in a Twitter post.
Sir Roger, who died in Switzerland, will have a private funeral in Monaco in accordance with his wishes, they added.
“The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone,” read the statement from Deborah, Geoffrey and Christian.
“Our thoughts must now turn to supporting Kristina [his wife] at this difficult time.”
It added: “We know our own love and admiration will be magnified many times over, across the world, by people who knew him for his films, his television shows and his passionate work for UNICEF which he considered to be his greatest achievement.
Along with his famous Bond role, Moore was also known for 1960s TV series The Persuaders and The Saint.
Sir Roger was also well known for his humanitarian work – he was introduced to Unicef by the late Audrey Hepburn and was appointed as a goodwill ambassador in 1991.

A very pregnant Beyoncé stripped down to a bikini top and long skirt during her Beverly Hills baby shower Saturday — with no qualms about showing off her twin-sized baby bump.
The 35-year-old mega-celebrity, who has yet to reveal the gender or due date of the babies-to-be, has decorated her massive belly with a large henna tattoo, as these photos from her star-studded shower show.
Guests included La La Anthony and tennis goddess Serena Williams, who is also pregnant.
Beyoncé’s ex-Destiny’s Child bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, also attended.
Proud mom Tina Knowles Lawson led guests in hollering “Happy Carter push party!” a shout-out to Beyoncé’s married name: Mrs. Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter.
Glancing at the man lying next to her, Karley Sciortino nestles into his neck.
Then she runs her fingers down his chiselled abs, stopping just short of the large bulge in his pants.
Straddling his muscular body, Karley slowly leans down and tentatively kisses his perfect lips on his perfect face.
Her companion is so handsome, he almost seems too good to be true – and that’s because he is.
His name is Gabriel and he’s a 5ft 9in, £5,000 silicone doll, and Karley, a single 31-year-old writer from New York, is testing out his full skills for a documentary about male sex dolls.
In the end she spends approximately 20 minutes getting intimate with Gabriel.
“We always assume men are more likely to enjoy sleeping with an object and that women need some sort of emotional connection to enjoy themselves, but that isn’t always the case,” explains Karley.
“These dolls are 100% silicone, which makes the penis feel incredibly lifelike. At times it was indistinguishable from a real one.”
Especially as Gabriel features flaccid and erect options.
“It’s almost creepy,” says Karley. “It’s made to be hard on the inside with a soft layer over it. There’s even real pubic hair.”
Talking about intercourse with Gabriel, she adds: “Overall, the experience was a good one. It’s definitely not the same as having sex with a person, but in terms of a new sexual experience, it’s worth it. With a doll you can learn how to make sex work for you – trying out speeds and angles. It might help you understand your body and that’s an empowering thing for a woman.”
Of course, these dolls have their limitations – their bodies can’t move independently and they’re cold – but the team behind them, US manufacturer Sinthetics, is currently experimenting with putting heat in the penis to make it feel more real.
It sounds a bit OTT, but with 80% of British women admitting they’ve used a sex toy*, it’s no surprise Gabriel has caused something of a stir.
According to The SUN UK, he hit the market in 2015 – along with two other male dolls, Akira and William – and they’re now selling out as quickly as their female counterparts, which Sinthetics launched in 2010.
Although there aren’t exact details on how many male dolls have been sold, Sinthetics says it has months’ worth of back orders.
